What can I do about colic? It’s so hard for me to hear my baby cry and there seems to be nothing I can do about it!

For any of you that have ridden the emotional rollercoaster of a colicky baby, it isn’t something you soon forget. The inability of a parent or caregiver to console the child leaves them questioning their parenting skills. A recent study that evaluated the effects of spinal manipulation versus a common prescription medication (dimethicone) reported:

“Spinal manipulation is effective in relieving infantile colic, and that by the end of the two week trial period, the manipulation group did significantly better than the drug group. In fact, crying was reduced 2.7 hours per day in the chiropractic group. In contrast, crying had dropped only 1 hour per day with the use of dimethicone. In the course of the 12 days of the study, the children being adjusted saw a 67% reduction in crying versus 38% in the drug group.”

Another investigation showed that 91% of parents in the study reported that improvement in colic occurred within one week of treatment.

I have also noticed some supplements that help increase the effectiveness of the adjustment. Check with me for proper supplementation.

What can I do about ear infections in my baby?
Otitis media (middle ear infections) is another source of grief for our precious little ones. There is uncertainty among experts as to the best solution for this common condition. Recent research has started to show the ineffectiveness of antibiotics for middle ear infections. In fact the New England Journal of Medicine reported, “Only 1 in 8 children with ear infections benefit from antibiotics, and researchers found that most subjects who received placebo recovered just as quickly as subjects taking prescription antibiotics.” The study continued “Within one week 81% of placebo subjects had recuperated.”

Of almost greater interest in this study, however, was how lead author Dr. J. Owen Hendley shared the same concerns about prescription side-effects and antibiotic resistance that chiropractors and other holistic health care professionals have worried about for decades. He advised physicians to prescribe antibiotics for ear infections sparingly, and suggested that practitioners wait 48 to 72 hours before administering drugs as ear infections often mend on their own.

Many studies have shown the connection between mechanical dysfunction of the Eustachian tube and middle ear infections, which make treating ear infections with chiropractic care a reasonable solution. There are special drops that can be placed in the child’s ear, as well as supplements that can be given that will enhance the chiropractic adjustment and increase the speed of recovery for the child.

The evidence for chiropractic care for mothers and their little bundles is steadily growing in the research literature.

One patient came in for laser therapy on a Friday because his doctor was planning surgery if his fracture was not healing by the following Wednesday. He also had laser therapy on Monday, and then went in on Wednesday for x-rays. The doctor took off his cast and threw it away, marveling the whole time about how completely healed the fracture was! What an incredible tool!

How can I get rid of the back pain I get during pregnancy? I don’t want to use medicines if I don’t have to.

Lower back pain and pregnancy are almost synonymous. In fact, several studies revealed that over 70% of pregnant women will experience lower back pain. A study reported in the prestigious medical journal Obstetrics and Gynecology revealed the leading cause of lower back pain was due to a mechanical dysfunction (or subluxation in chiropractic terms) in the sacroiliac joint. The journal Family Practice Resources reported a study completed by the Rochester School of Medicine where they reported that manipulation (adjustment) for sacroiliac subluxation was 91% effective in relieving back pain during pregnancy!

In addition to helping with back pain, it has been suggested that chiropractic care during pregnancy may reduce the time of labor and delivery between 24% (for the first child) and 39% (for the second child).

A recent study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiologic Therapeutics reported that the Webster Technique may be effective in relieving the musculoskeletal causes of breech presentations that are unlikely to spontaneously change to normal in the 8th month of pregnancy.

I have a special table in my office that is designed to accommodate the pregnant body. Many women receive great relief from pain by having chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy.

So many problems are seeing great results with chiropractic care combined with Class IV Laser therapy, available at Stone Chiropractic. This is the same laser that was featured in the news recently. Here’s what patients have to say about our laser:

Nearly two years ago I cut my arm and wrist on broken glass. Two tendons and two nerves were severed. After surgery I have had numbness and extreme localized hyper-sensitivity. My surgeon told me it would be many years before I would be back to normal, and that the last sense to return would be that of hot and cold. Shortly after the first treatment with the laser, I was surprised to be able to feel the cold of a door knob. After only two weeks of treatments, the hyper-sensitivity in my hand has decreased, and the numbness has been mostly replaced with a tingling sensation. I am excited to feel the progress as the treatments continue.

J.M. Lehi, Utah

Nine years ago I had a test done on my lymph to rule out cancer. It was the old kind of test that took most of lymph nodes from one arm pit to get a fair sampling of nodes. I was left with lymphedema, and numbness from my arm pit to my elbow. Since then I have had daily therapy to drain the fluid from my arm.

Dr. Stone encouraged me to start laser therapy. I was surprised at how easy and pain-free the treatments are. The first thing I noticed was a deep ache all over my arm, but then on the third treatment, my arm pit started to sweat! I haven’t had any sweat in that arm pit since the surgery. During the sixth visit I noticed sensation below my elbow, and by the seventh visit I was having sensations around the outer edge of my arm pit. My lymph system is working better, and I can’t wait to see what else improves during the next few visits!

L. B. Utah

January of this year, I made a commitment to my family that I would accompany them on a trip to Nauvoo, Illinois. After three failed surgeries to repair a knee tendon two years ago, I was still walking with a cane. My back was paying a great price. Time was moving on, our tickets were purchased, our reservations were made, yet my back seemed to be getting worse. I simply didn’t know what to do.

I was driving through town one day and I thought about Dr. Stone and his “feel good bed”. I wondered if it would help me. When I went in, Dr. Stone said, “We have gone high tech, now. We have this new laser light that is working wonders on deep pain.” I didn’t even hesitate. I knew I needed help.

After three treatments I could walk without my cane. I can now stand up straight and feel, oh, so much better. And tomorrow we go to Nauvoo!

M.L. Pleasant Grove, Utah

Call today for an appointment and see how the K laser can help you!

Imagine trying to balance a bowling ball on a stick. To make it more difficult, tilt the stick forward while trying to maintain balance of the bowling ball. That’s what it’s like trying to support your head on your neck if it loses its natural curve!

A whiplash injury can cause your neck to lose its natural curve. Adjustments, exercises, stretching, and an orthopedic pillow can all assist you in restoring your neck’s normal curvature. Now think of the same bowling ball resting on a large spring… can you see and feel the difference?

At Stone Chiropractic, injuries are treated with chiropractic adjustments with the hands, appropriate physical therapy, exercise to rehabilitate, and nutrition to help the body have what it needs to heal. One of the therapies available for people injured in auto accidents is the K-Laser. Whiplash, bruises, cuts, and other injuries heal faster when treated with this class IV, 10 watt laser. It is different from other lasers like the cold laser or class III laser, because the power is much higher and the results are incredibly faster.

Should a driver give a statement to the other person’s insurance?

This is a question that comes up frequently in my office. An attorney that I trust, Randal L. Meek answers that question:

After being in an auto accident, a driver is sometimes contacted by the other driver’s insurer. Here is what most auto insurance agents recommend:

Q: Should a driver give a statement to the other person’s insurance company?

A: No. Unless their agent or attorney agrees, a driver should say nothing.

Q: How could making a statement hurt?

A: Most people are friendly and want to answer questions honestly and fully. That could hurt a driver’s case if he or she makes remarks that somehow increase their own liability or reduce the other driver’s responsibility.

Q: So how should drivers respond if agents pressure them?

A: Drivers should tell representatives that all further contact should be directed to their insurance agents or attorneys.

Q: What else can drivers do?

A: As soon as they’re done with this kind of call, drivers should write a short record covering the conversation, noting date, time, topics, and whatever else seems important. Stay in touch with insurance agents and attorneys.

Remember, if you are ever involved in an automobile accident, be sure to seek care right away. Statistics show that chiropractic care right after an accident is more effective at helping patients get better faster.

Care in my office is covered by auto insurance companies.

Sports injuries are common in today’s active society. Due to increases in athletes’ size, speed, power and strength, greater stress in placed upon an athlete’s muscles, tendons and ligaments. The key to properly treating a chronic sports injury is to identify the complete cause, not simply to treat the injured area.

If an individual suffers from multiple chronic sports injuries, dehydration must be ruled out. This is found in individuals that have a tendency to sweat more than average. In this case, increasing water intake is good, but not sufficient to ward off potential injuries. Electrolyte balance is very important because sweat contains salts that must be replaced. When the body is dehydrated and imbalanced from an electrolyte standpoint, pulled muscles are very common.

Chronic sports injuries are often due to overuse syndromes. In year-round warm climates, like in California and Florida, athletes can play the same sport throughout the year making overuse and repetitive stress injuries such as tendinitis (painful inflammation of the tendons), and arthrites (joint inflammation) commonplace.

At Stone Chiropractic, athletes enjoy the benefits of having a chiropractor who knows extremity adjusting. Not only can Dr. Stone align the spine, but ankles, knees, wrists, shoulders, all get put in their places, thus improving the golf swing, the running, the balance, etc.

Dr. Stone also addresses nutrition as it applies to athletes. With the increased intake of oxtgen comes the increased need for anti-oxidants and omega 3.

In addition, Dr. Stone has the K-Laser. This is a class IV, 10 watt laser that heals on the cellular level. There is a wide variety of sports injuries that heal faster with laser therapy:

Bruises

Fractures Tendonitis

Sprains/strains

Joint pain
